What inspired you to write Save Yourself?

Honestly, I’d been writing strictly YA books for a few years and I decided to expand my horizons and test my skills out on an NA book. At first it was a little awkward, but once Brogan started speaking to me, I couldn’t get the words down fast enough.

When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

Fifteen. I started my first novel, which is now published, at that age and discovered I lot more stories in me than I could have imagined. I needed people to know my characters and their stories.

What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

Uumm…maybe about five? The Faraway Tree Collection by Enid Blyton was my first proper book, and I devoured it.

What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

Paranormal romance, dystopian, fantasy. A bit of horror here and there.

What is your favorite book?

Oh come on! That’s not a fair question! There are so many. But among my faves are Clockwork Prince by Cassie Clare and Shade by Jeri Smith-Ready.

You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

Cassandra Clare. Because her Shadowhunter world is amazing. I love every one of her characters, especially Will Herondale. I’m a sucker for a broken toy.

If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

Hmm. I’d like to visit Victorian times. I love the style of that era, all the velvet and fancy dresses and men in hats. It seems so seductive.

When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

It depends on the book and how much the characters are speaking to me. Sometimes it takes me months to finish a book, and sometimes I’m up all night for three weeks and it’s done. Save Yourself was one of those quick, can’t-get-it-out-of-my-head ones.

Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

I have two cats. Sooki, a ten year old black and ginger female with an attitude problem. And Biscuit, who is the dumbest cat on the planet. We don’t know how old he is because the cat and dog home gave us the wrong papers – we thought he was a girl until we took him to get spayed!

What is your “to die for”, favorite food/foods to eat?

Macaroni cheese. I could live on it. In fact, I’ll eat anything as long as you put cheese on it.

Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Keep trying. Sometimes you feel like you won’t ever finish a novel – that’s because it’s the wrong novel you’re trying to write. Not every good story makes for a great book. Sometimes you feel like you won’t ever get published – remember, even JK Rowling got turned down a dozen times! Don’t give up.
Just keep writing. Don’t do it for money or fame – do it because you love to write. That’s the only way to go about it.
