When hot and handsome Vince Moretti walks into Ashley Santoro’s life, she ultimately has to decide whether she will continue to hold onto the bad-girl, biracial routine that has her looking for love in superficial relationships only—or if what she has with this star basketball player is true love. Emotionally neglected and abandoned by her mother and father, the Ashley series details a courageous journey of a young adult fielding her way through alcoholism and overeating into her own discovery of how to love and how to be loved. Accused of soliciting sex from three New York Knicks players at a party in Manhattan, Ashley abandons her promising new relationship with Vince, a partnership that she feels she does not deserve. Caught up in a cycle of self-defeat, will Ashley continue her downward spiral and ultimately sabotage her first true love, as well?

Jamaica-born Pennsylvania author Patrice M. Foster comes from an abusive background, having been abandoned by first her mother who fled to America to escape her abusive husband only to be deserted by the father resulting in Patrice and her siblings been placed in abusive foster homes. At age twelve she with her siblings were unsuccessfully reunited with their mother, returned to their father became homeless, and yet survived.
Patrice, incredibly, finished school and moved to New Jersey where she entered an LPN program 1986. After graduating, she relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she furthered her career by becoming an RN in 1998. She continued her education by pursuing a BSN program at Immaculate University. Aware of the poor treatment encountered by nurses, in 2000, she established her company, Respect Medical Services, through which she committed herself to improve the working conditions and compensation of medical personnel.

Her belief was that nurses who were treated and compensated as professionals were better able to perform as compassionate caregivers, thereby creating an environment beneficial to the physical and emotional wellbeing of their patients. Patrice’s greatest sense of accomplishment was achieved by securing employment for others. Though she closed her business in 2004, she continues to work as a nurse, as well as traveling the path to healing and self-discovery.

In Patrice’s early books she transforms this injurious life into stories that are heart rending, but now, in keeping with her background of survival against tough odds she turns her writing to Romances – each new story shares much of what she has experienced and has provided extraordinary growth.

The synopsis of this very brief (33 pages) novella follows: ‘When hot and handsome Vince Moretti walks into Ashley Santoro’s life, she ultimately has to decide whether she will continue to hold onto the bad-girl, biracial routine that has her looking for love in superficial relationships only—or if what she has with this star basketball player is true love. Caught up in a cycle of self-defeat, will Ashley continue her downward spiral and ultimately sabotage her first true love, as well?’

Patrice understands character development well and a times her prose is poetically subtle – ‘When Ashley misted her hybrid orchid— a bright red Cattleya Circle of Life— she momentarily forgot that her own life had no love. Its brilliant top petals fanned open within twelve hours one evening, captured by a time-release video that she’d painstakingly prepared for extra credit. Even her botany teacher voiced amazement at the sheer size of its lateral sepals and vibrant yellow stigmatic surface— the orchid itself, seven inches in diameter— all carefully cultivated by a senior-high student with a reputation among peers and teachers alike for being so implacably rude and angry. Its dorsal sepal cascaded above the rest of the botany projects lined in Edward R. Murrow High’s greenhouse, and for all intents and purposes, Ashley’s plant should’ve withered in sorrow. But it thrived.

Ashley herself believed that meant something— but for the time being, she didn’t know what. Any aspirations, hopes and dreams she’d imagined for herself remained narrowly confined to botany class.’

Patrice knows the right mixture of raw language and tenderness and this is one short but very powerful little romance. Watch her grow. Grady Harp, February 17

When the Dead Come A Knockin’ by B.L. Brunnemer A New Adult Fiction Book

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What is not to love about this new adult fiction book except it had to end and book 3 is not out! I read this 500+ page book is a little over 2 days. I love this series and have been hooked from book 1. Usually, I fizzle out when the series is not already out together but not with this one. I was just as hungry for book two a month later as I was when I left off book 1.

This book offers so much. Lexie is a heroine to so many females. She stands up to bullies and bi***es; she refuses to back down from her beliefs; she loves wholeheartedly, and she never lets people down. That is why I want to know more about Dylan and his science project.

I really hope book 3 opens up more secrets and explodes with harem finally taking its rightful place. Two books are enough teasing! I’m not sure about Zeke though. His girlfriend is the best and even better is the best kind of friend for Lexie. Hmmm…I guess I will have to wait and see, which I hope will be REALLY freaking soon!

If you haven’t read this series yet, you have to start with book 1:

Trying To Live With The Dead (The Veil Diaries Series Book 1)

This book is simply amazing.  You can’t read these books out of order or they won’t make any sense.  So, go here and book 1 through Amazon for $4.99 and begin an amazing adventure!  Here is a little teaser:

Hi, I’m Alexis Delaney. I’m your average 17-year-old girl. Except I can see the dead. And talk to the dead. And push them away and, well, help them move on. So..okay, I’m not your average 17-year-old girl. For years I’ve been struggling to survive the souls still roaming around. The shitheads always seem to find me. Moving from town to town every few months never helped either. More dead just always find me. But things are changing for me now. I’m moving in with my uncle Rory and cousin Tara. I’m finally going to be able to do normal teenage stuff I’ve been missing out on. Right?

Well, if this one bitch of a ghost could leave me alone on campus that would be great. Especially since I haven’t told my new friends about my abilities. Can you believe this? Five good looking guys practically adopt me on my first day of school, and I still think they’re a bit nuts for it. Now if I can only just keep my life with the dead from mixing with my normal life, everything would be great. Yeah…I don’t see that happening either. But I’m going to give it a shot. Who knows? It might work.

I started this book and then I laid it down. The writing style was a little simplistic at first, and I could not get hooked fast enough. Then, my deadline drew near and I picked it up again. Once I got settled again, I was hooked. In many ways, I am very proud of Murphy because she has a set of codes she lives by and will not compromise. She hates drugs and will not tolerate them. I also am proud of the fact that she has a goal and does not let life get in her way. I don’t think I am that strong. Love has always been my weakness. My heart broke with Murphy’s and August’s as their lives progressed and hard choices had to be made. Overall, good story!

I waited to write this review for a couple of hours because I am trying to wrap my head around how I feel. Did I like this book overall? Yes. But then why did I give a 3? I am torn because my analytical mind and my screw it because it is fiction mind are at war. I loved the plot and the characters. I loved Dimitri and his fierce passion and demanding presence. The chemistry is palpable between Dimitri and Kiera, but then why the 3? I think it was because I was left with too many questions. Questions that I can’t reveal without giving the plot away. I kept waiting for the betrayal or the twist because Kiera’s brother keeps alluding to one but nothing. I felt like a huge something was going to happen and then nothing. I mean it was a quick and passionate short read, but although it was good, it had the potential to be freaking amazing. I think a book 2 is in order!

This was a very interesting read. I was not really sure what to expect when I requested to read this book from the new adult group on Goodreads, but I was pleasantly surprised. This book was about growing up and truth and consequences. I felt the parents’ reactions were a little over the top, but I suppose that there are some sperm and egg donors who could be that clueless and dense towards raising a child. Edie is the heart of this story. She is the catalyst for change for everyone. Nick who learns how to love and trust; her parents who are forced to WAKE UP, her friends, and even the girl who she mentors. She keeps the story swirling learning and loving everyone. It is her innocence and determination that fuels the story. Really good read!

There were many aspects of this book that I liked, but a few that I struggled with. First, I love how two very broken people who span different eras can find love and heal hearts. Hooligan and Gabbi are the perfect match, and I love how H says that those with the worst lives deserve the most love. It is a wonderful storyline about redemption and forgiveness and second chances. Gabbi is a little girl thrown into womanhood because of her selfish parents. And I guess if the book had really only focused on the main characters, then I probably would have love it more, but dealing with her parents was too much. By the end of the book, I was losing focus but like I said it was a good book overall with wonderful life lessons.

I think that most people would give this book a five because the sexual explosion that emanates from Jax and Selena is off that charts. So, even though this book was a raging inferno, I actually wanted less sex and more substance. Don’t get me wrong; it was an amazing plot idea. It was suspenseful and loved seeing how Sel is able to awaken the light inside of Jax. I loved the friendship between Isa and Sel and how they were able to endure anything that happens as long as they have each other. But I also need to say, Jax got on my nerves from time to time with all his controlling behavior, but I also realize knowing his life, he needed that control. But overall, good book about love, life, and happiness.

The quote that came to mind when I finished this book was “It was the best of times and the worst of times.” Good gracious, I have NEVER read a more f$%#&ed up book in my whole life. It was like being in the mind of a mad man. Silver must be a genius or wrote this while going through her own ups and downs or both because I have known people with PTSD and depression, and she nailed it. The amount of pain that the reader must endure while reading this is astronomical. Three times I put this book down refusing to read another page only to pick it up again. So, why give it a 4? Because it’s freaking genius. But be warned, it is not an easy read from either Jesse’s or Charlie’s perspective. Each carry his/her own wounds some seen and most in the mind. There is no way to adequately describe this book, so give it a try and see for yourself.

This was an awesome book! The only time I put it down was to sleep and that was only because I fell asleep reading. There was so much sexual tension that I thought I would explode once they even kissed. Rooter might be a big bad biker but he was kind and gentle and even cried. I love a protective, sexy biker. Swoon. This book did drive me a little crazy, though. Sophie and Rooter get very little down time. It is one problem after another. So, I don’t really feel like I got to enjoy them together. I saw at the end that there is another book coming. I can’t wait because I hoping things calm down some and these two can get married and have some babies! I was so happy to see a part two because I just was not ready to let go. So bring on book two!!!
